GANDATOTO – South Korean President Choi Sang-mok on Sunday (29/12/2024) announced a period of national mourning for the plane crash that killed at least 177 people, with two people still missing, according to the presidential office. The announcement came hours after a passenger plane carrying 181 people made an emergency landing and exploded at Muan airport, located west of South Korea. Two crew members survived the incident.
“We extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the families left behind by those who lost their lives in this unexpected tragedy,” Choi said. He announced a seven-day national mourning period, which is valid from Sunday (29/12/2024) until midnight Saturday (4/12/2024).

Choi also designated Muan as a special disaster zone, making it eligible for state protection. “We can add all the necessary protection for recovery efforts, protection for bereaved families, and medical care for the injured,” he added.
The pas president also instructed the relevant institutions to deploy all available sources of strength, including equipment, personnel, and infrastructure.
Choi, who also serves as deputy prime minister for Economic Affairs and finance minister, took on the leadership role of pas on Friday (27/12/2024) after the suspension of the duties of Interim President Han Duck-soo by the National Assembly. Han was dismissed less than two weeks after taking over from President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14, who was impeached for poor handling of the emergency law.
